About Us

The Matt Leinart Flag Football League, in conjunction with the NFL Flag Football program, is a flag football league for kids in 1st-8th grade, with the emphasis on community fun. The league is for both boys and girls of all skill levels and promotes a competitive, confidence-building, non-contact football experience.

Founded in Newport Beach in 2010, the goal of the league was to provide a fun league for kids to be involved in, while also developing football skills. What makes the Matt Leinart Flag Football League different from most is the emphasis on passing, similar to the high school passing leagues that teams participate in throughout the Spring and Summer months. The number of runs that a team has is limited, while QB’s have a set time to throw the ball, before a sack is called. There is no defensive rushing, which allows QB’s and WR’s to work their dropbacks and routes without an unblocked player constantly  in their face. We feel that these rules allow for greater development of football skills, while making for a more exciting game.

The league now has locations throughout Orange County, and we look forward to more continued growth.

Coaches

Do you love football? Do you enjoy the sport and are looking for a way to get more involved? If the answer is yes then coaching might be an option to consider. Coaching youth flag football is exciting and fulfilling, and gives you an opportunity to teach skills to a new generation of players.  Whether you’ve played in the pros, or never at all, we believe that anyone can be a successful coach if they are dedicated and passionate about becoming a good coach.

We value our coaches above all else, because they are the ones that decide what kind of experience the athletes will have with flag football. As an organization we determine success by how many of our players return the next year. The more players returning, means  the more players who had a great time the previous year, and it is our coaches who will dictate that the most. We believe in positive coaching, in which developing positive character traits and teaching life lessons are more important than winning.

Duties of a head coach:

  • Need to be able to work with kids ages 5 – 13 and teach them fundamentals of football.
  • Be reliable and be able to volunteer for one day of practice, and one game each week. Games are on Friday nights (our South County location may have 1-2 Saturday night games).
  • Be enthusiastic, patient, and persistent.
  • Have knowledge of football and its rules.
  • Communicate with league officials and parents.
  • Be able to deal with issues that arise, on and off the field, at all practices and games.

If this something you are interested in then please make sure when registering your child you mark the checkbox for coaching, and a league representative will contact you.

Parents

Parent Code of Conduct

Youth sports programs play an important role in promoting the physical, social and emotional development of children. It is therefore essential for parents, coaches and officials to encourage youth athletes to embrace the values of good sportsmanship. Moreover, adults involved in youth sports events should be models of good sportsmanship and should lead by example by demonstrating fairness, respect and self control. Therefore, all parents, coaches and spectators will abide by the following rules:

  1. I will not engage, or encourage my child to engage in unsportsmanlike conduct with any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee, such as booing and taunting, refusing to shake hands, or using profane language or gestures.
  2. I will not engage, or encourage my child to engage in any behavior which would endanger the health, safety or well being of any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee.
  3. I will not engage in verbal or physical threats or abuse aimed at any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee.
  4. I will not use, or encourage any other person to use drugs or alcohol while at games, and will not attend, coach, officiate or participate in any league event while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  5. I will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or event.
  6. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.
  7. I will respect the officials and their authority during games, and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
  8. I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
  9. I will treat any coach, parent, player, participant, official or any other attendee with respect regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or ability.
  10. I will remember that youth sports are played for fun and the game is played for the youth and not for the adults.

Individuals who fail to conform to the foregoing while attending, coaching, officiating or participating in any game will be subject to disciplinary action, including but not limited to the following in any order or combination as decided by the league:

Verbal warning issued by the league.

Written warning issued by the league.

Immediate ejection from the game.

Suspended from a game, or multiple games.

Removal from the league.

Any player, coach, or parent ejected from a game will automatically be suspended for one game. All ejections are reviewed by the league, and if necessary can be extended to multiple games. A second ejection will be an automatic two game suspension, and possible removal from the league. A third ejection is removal from the league.
